‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 will return to Spain for filming

Take a look -Game of Thrones” is a heck of an ambitious show, and with that comes a heck of an ambitious budget. Unlike many other shows forced to either diversify an established location or rush in front of a green screen, they can actually take off to different parts of the world and film on location. Their primary sets are in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but they have also filmed everywhere from Morocco to Croatia to Iceland.

Next season, we have some confirmation now that they are returning once again to Spain. They used parts of Seville in season 5 to portray the region of Dorne, and now Deadline reports that the show will be filming in such places as Girona and Peñiscola. There’s no word yet on what these two locations will stand in for, but it is pretty clear upon looking at them online why HBO would want to include them in some way; they’re gorgeous!

The reason why all of this season 6 news is coming out now is a simple testament to an extremely complicated filming schedule that the show has. Production for the next season typically begins the summer beforehand, where they can take advantage of filming in warm weather, while also getting the opportunity to implement a variety of visual effects in post-production in plenty of time before the season ultimately premieres in late March / early April.

We would imagine that the show will continue to use Croatia as a filming location yet again, and there could always be a few more locations introduced. We’ll let you know when there is further information.
