2015-16 Preview: Will Fox’s ‘Lucifer’ be a victory for Tom Ellis?

When Fox first announced that they were picking up “Lucifer” for the new TV season, it was considered in many ways to be a victory for the underdogs. This was a show that was firmly considered to be on the bubble, but thanks most likely to its fun premise and the presence of Tom Ellis and Lauren German, it managed to get that coveted pickup … even if you have to wait until midseason to see it.

Now, we just have to wait and see what this show brings to the table when it ultimately premieres later this year. Take a look at the official logline first and foremost for some of the first official details on what you can expect:

“Lucifer, bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals. Based on the Vertigo comic book.”

What works – It’s Lucifer solving crimes! The entire premise of this is completely absurd, but the reason it probably still works is because all parties involved seem to be well aware of that very fact. It’s funny, intense at times, but very much tongue-in-cheek. We actually really enjoy these random crime shows that have a seemingly-impossible pair solving problems while creating them at the same time. Think along the lines of “Psych” or “Monk,” but this time you have a devil getting involved!

What doesn’t – The show has already picked up a little bit of controversy. Namely, One Million Moms is protesting it already for its portrayal of Lucifer, and they don’t want to see television making him into someone who could be seen as either likable or cool. Obviously, some people including them are going to take this show too seriously. That for now is the main thing standing in its way.

Overall – While you’re going to be waiting for a while to see “Lucifer” come on the air, we dig its vibe and we like the cast. It’s certainly something we’ll consider watching.
