‘Survivor’ turns 15, and ‘Second Chance’ is far from the end

Cambodia -If we are talking about major milestones in the history of television, today is indeed a crazy one. It marks the 15-year anniversary of the premiere of “Survivor,” one of the most iconic series to ever hit the airwaves. Nobody expected that it would be become a global success story, and we’re now looking at the show as a trailblazer. There would not be a reality TV genre like there is today if it did not come out first. It brought strategy, gameplay, and survival onto a single show that had us hooked almost from the get-go.

As for some other great news, it is very well possible that there could be another 15 years still to come. While the show is no longer the highest-rated series out there, it does still have a dedicated following, and to go along with that ratings that have stayed fairly steady while some other competition shows have declined dramatically. This is something that executive producer Mark Burnett has taken note of, and that is why he tells Entertainment Weekly that he sees no end in immediate sight:

“Survivor is stronger than ever! Remember when American Idol moved to Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and people were like ‘Ohhhhhhh, that could really, really hurt Survivor.’ I remember saying to friends who worked on Idol and others in the business, ‘I don’t know. I think Idol and X-Factor before that may have made the wrong move, going up against the wrong show.’ And, of course, look what happened. And now Survivor is the survivor. I think it almost doubled the American Idol finale a couple of weeks ago. It’s amazing.”

Ultimately, it feels to us that the only elements that “Survivor” continues to need to ensure success are a great cast, the presence of Jeff Probst as host, and at least enough elements that capture fully the success of the original.
