‘Elementary’ season 4 spoilers: How will Joan support Sherlock?

ElementaryClearly, some things have changed when it comes to the landscape of “Elementary.” When the third season came to a close, it did so with a suggestion that after years of sobriety, Sherlock Holmes may have finally relapsed. There were difficult circumstances involved, and as a result of all of this, we may be finally meeting his father after spending so much time hearing (but not seeing) the character.

So what is going to be Joan’s role in the show in the event that Sherlock has fallen in to some of his old ways? While in the early days of the show she played the part of sober companion to Jonny Lee Miller’s character, every indication right now suggests that their history over the years has changed that. Just take a look at what executive producer Rob Doherty had to say in a chat with Entertainment Weekly:

“Joan will not revert to sober companion mode … She’s past that now. Yes, she can and will be helpful to Sherlock, but primarily as a friend and a partner.”

Does this mean that we could have a new sober companion? We don’t want to speculate too much on that just yet, but we are hoping at least that we could see an interesting new dynamic for both characters. We always enjoy crime series where every season has an almost different flavor to it. Season 2 had a fair share of Mycroft, whereas season 3 started with plenty of Kitty Winter. What could the next batch of episodes hold? It will be interesting to find out come the fall.
