‘Halt and Catch Fire’ season 2 spoilers: Series boss lays out plans

Halt -

AMC may not have found a commercial smash hit with the first season of “Halt and Catch Fire,” but we do still feel that they found something that was very valuable from a quality point of view. It is a show taking you back in time to the earlier days of computer companies, where there was still experimentation and risk-taking and trying to understand just what consumers wanted.

The first season revolved heavily around trying to understand the consumer business, and the second season could feature even more branching out following Joe’s meltdown, and Donna and Cameron’s decision to try to start a business together.

In previewing the season ahead to The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Jonathan Lisco makes it clear that really, you should not expect this series to be too much a re-telling of any particular story from the 1980s; instead, it hopes to capture many of the themes, and also focus on the characters and their circumstances:

“We’re not telling the iconic Steve Jobs or Steve Wozniak story. So we’re not borrowing liberally from the specifics of their journeys. However, having done 20 episodes of the show and meeting a lot of people from tech in this era, we find common currents like the willingness to take risks when everyone is telling you you’re crazy. The driving ambition you feel even though it has a dark side, the things you’re willing to sacrifice for what you believe in. These emotional and psychological touchstones are what we’ve really been taking from reality. The way our characters come back together happens in a dynamic, unexpected way.”

Even though we have not personally seen the premiere episode just yet, what we’re hearing right now is that this is an easy show to dive into if you are a new viewer, and that it’s rather excellent. We very much enjoyed season 1, but this may take things to another level.
