‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Dwayne Johnson as Coco the Wrestler is still a classic

More news -Typically, we focus our “Saturday Night Live” re-watch articles on one sketch that stands the test of time from a previous show (we do these any time that NBC airs a repeat), but when it comes to the Dwayne Johnson show from earlier this year, you could almost do it for the entire episode. This was the best edition of “SNL” all season, anchored mostly by just how comfortable Johnson is handling live sketches. He is charismatic, energetic, and most of all funny. In a way, it seems fit that professional wrestling would be great training for a live comedy show.

Here’s a general overview of some of what you should go back and watch again: “The Rock” Obama in the Cold Open, the Pep Boys commercial (even if the reference is a little bit dated now), the Bambi trailer, and of course the wonderfully absurd Indiana Jones spoof that gave Pete Davidson and Kate McKinnon some really great material alongside Johnson.

To us, though, the best of the night (and maybe the best sketch of the entire season) is the wrestling promo where Johnson plays an overly aggressive wrestler named Coco who seems to have no idea what it really means to cut a promo. Rather than making attacks at Bobby Moynihan’s wrestling character, he instead goes through a series of revealing personal revelations while taunting him at the same time. Some of our favorite moments include specifically Coco telling him that he has a secret daughter that he never knew about, and that he catfished him in an effort to learn many of his personal secrets.

Of course, this is so much funnier watching it than it would ever be to describe. We could watch this one a dozen times and never be bored.
