‘The Bastard Executioner’: Kurt Sutter’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’ follow-up gets official series order

Executioner -While this news is so obvious that it almost bears not reporting, we figured that fans of Kurt Sutter’s would still want to know that it is now official: “The Bastard Executioner” has been ordered to series by FX. This is the prolific creator’s follow-up to “Sons of Anarchy,” which lasted for seven seasons and is to us the biggest success story in the history of the entire network.

The cast for the series includes Lee Jones (a relative unknown in the lead role), Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal, and even Sutter himself playing The Dark Mute. Production on the pilot took place earlier this year in Wales, and filming will resume this summer.

One change that is different right away between this show and “Sons of Anarchy” comes via episode count. While the motorcycle drama commonly received 13-episode orders, “The Bastard Executioner” is only getting ten. Our reasoning for that is simply that this is a very different sort of show, and one that is being filmed on location and may require even more work behind the scenes. Also, FX has already shown that they have no problem being flexible with their episode lengths depending on what the script dictates.

A surprise is that somehow, this is all still going to come together in time to air this fall. “Sons of Anarchy” typically premiered in the second week of September, and while we’re not entirely sure this will premiere as early in the year (it doesn’t need to given its shorter order), it is probably going to have the same exact timeslot.
