‘Game of Thrones’ season 5, episode 6: George R.R. Martin reacts to Sansa scene
Of course, almost every person out there wants to get George R.R. Martin’s reaction to almost everything related to “Game of Thrones.” He is the man responsible for penning the A Song of Ice and Fire books, and for a time the HBO show adhered very closely to them. So when things start to really deviate to a certain degree, the reaction from a good many fans out there is rather severe.
Of course, fans were definitely in an uproar over what happened on this past episode of the show, mostly because of how the story revolved around Sansa Stark being forced to lose her virginity to Ramsay Snow. It is a story that differs greatly from the books, but the showrunners wanted to give Sophie Turner some great material to further show the full extent of her transition. Speaking about this in his official Not a Blog, Martin is quick to remind us that these sort of deviations are going to happen more and more, and he does not begrudge showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss for them:
“There have been differences between the novels and the television show since the first episode of season one. And for just as long, I have been talking about the butterfly effect. Small changes lead to larger changes lead to huge changes. HBO is more than forty hours into the impossible and demanding task of adapting my lengthy (extremely) and complex (exceedingly) novels, with their layers of plots and subplots, their twists and contradictions and unreliable narrators, viewpoint shifts and ambiguities, and a cast of characters in the hundreds … The longer the show goes on, the bigger the butterflies become. And now we have reached the point where the beat of butterfly wings is stirring up storms, like the one presently engulfing my email.”
The other obvious challenge that David and Dan are currently facing is strictly knowing where to take these stories, given that there is nothing as concrete out there for them. Do they know the events of The Winds of Winter better than most? Sure, but it is still challenging given how close the show is to catching up to the present of the books.
