‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 2, episode 20 reaction: Exec on Jiaying’s big decision

Agents of SHIELD -Is war brewing on Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” moving into the big finale next week? It is hard to say anything definitively, but we know that we are at the precipice of seeing some more conflict on the series than we have as of late. There is an action-packed two hours coming up, and much of it may start now with the aftermath of what Jiaying chose to do to Gonzales.

So what are we supposed to take away from her actions at the moment? Ultimately, it feels like a whole lot of it was based out of her own desire for self-preservation. Unfortunately for her, we’ve also seen here in the process that there could be some major consequences of her doing whatever she can to try to “protect” her people and by extension Skye. Just take a look at what executive producer Jeffrey Bell had to say to The Hollywood Reporter:

“What Jiaying says is true. She has set up a community in the middle of nowhere so they would be left alone. We know that her experience in the past with SHIELD — even though we know it was Hydra masked as SHIELD — was horrible. So now here she is with SHIELD showing up at her doorstep saying, ‘Hi, we don’t want to hurt you, but we do want to index you, and we do want to monitor you,’ and that didn’t work well for her. She is trying to protect her people. I don’t think she’s a bad person for doing it, but the way she’s doing it seems a little bit suspect.”

This episode should make it clear just where Skye stands, but also what direction SHIELD as an organization is going moving into the third season. (That has not been confirmed just yet, but you should all but be convinced that it is coming. Marvel’s relationship with Disney is much too valuable.)
