‘Fear the Walking Dead’ to be Hulu, not Netflix, exclusive

This is a move that definitely comes to us today as a surprise. At Hulu’s newfront presentation on Wednesday, it was unveiled that they have signed a new deal with AMC Networks, home of such channels as AMC, IFC, Sundance TV, BBC America, and more, to provide streaming options for many of their new or upcoming shows. In turn, this means that they will become the exclusive home for “Fear the Walking Dead,” the spin-off to “The Walking Dead” that is premiering this summer.

This certainly does mark an enormous change for AMC, given that for many years whether intentional or not, they have been associated with Netflix. For example, “The Walking Dead” proper is a huge hit on the service, and many attribute Netflix for making “Breaking Bad” into a commercial smash in its final seasons. That is why “Better Call Saul” also has an agreement with them coming up.

This is just one of two huge coups that Hulu has managed to pull off in the past 24 hours, beginning with the reveal that they will be streaming all episodes of “Seinfeld” after acquiring them for a hefty fee. Now, if only there was some sort of way in which they could add a higher price tier for the same amount of programming with fewer / no commercials. If the library is robust enough, people will pay for it. Remember that people are shelling out $14.99 a month for the standalone HBO NOW service, and it not even available on every streaming device just yet.
