‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Does Chris Hemsworth bring ‘Avengers’ spoof to life?

Over the course of the next two weeks, you better prepare for a heck of a lot of promotion for “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” over on “Saturday Night Live.” Next week, the sketch show is going to be hosted by Scarlett Johansson, and tonight, the show is repeating their episode hosted by Chris Hemsworth. Admittedly, this was an episode we had reasonably low expectations for going in when it first aired earlier this year, but it actually managed to surprise us in many ways.

For our Re-Watch series today, we’re focusing on a sketch that mostly just works here for the sake of relevancy: A “news report” featuring the Avengers after they saved the day. This was not the funniest sketch of the episode, but it is worth visiting again now for one simple question: Why did the show do this sketch back when it first aired?

As we mentioned, Scarlett is hosting the next episode of the show, and that is really when the promotional push for “Age of Ultron” is going to be at a higher peak than it was back when Hemsworth’s episode first aired. You could have tried to get him back for a cameo, and maybe you could have gotten either Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans to go along with it.

The reason that this sketch still works regardless to us is for one simple reason: The dance moves, the performance of Hemsworth, and ultimately just the silliness of it all. It knows that it is lampooning something popular, but does not really strive for accuracy so much as humor.
