‘The Voice UK’ final: Stevie McCrorie’s win nets lowest ratings of season

BBC One -This is something that you do not see every day, but the final of “The Voice UK” did not get a ratings bump at all on Saturday. As a matter of fact, the victory lap for fireman Stevie McCrorie actually was the lowest-rated installment of the entire season.

Overall, the final was watched by 6.3 million viewers, which is down around 300,000 from the end of last season, which was won by Jermain Jackman. While nobody wants to see describes, that is still a drop of less than 10%. Anytime that you see a decrease that incremental, it’s really nothing to worry too much about. The most important thing is that the show is that it continues to dominate the ratings on Saturday, and it avoid the competition from “Britain’s Got Talent.” That was something that hurt the show mightily in each of its first two years.

Ultimately, the big thing moving into season 5 is that this show really needs to take a harder look at how they have a journey from start to finish. Right now, they are far too reliant on the Blind Audition gimmick, and they just throw a ton of those at you at the start, and then very little time the rest of the season to get to know the actual contestants. There were only three live shows to get to know the contestants; reducing the blind auditions by a show and adding another week to the lives could make all of the difference to making the singers more memorable, and actually giving them a chance to be remembered after the fact. It’s so impossible as it is for winners to succeed, especially since it is hard for the BBC to fund careers, given their nature as a publicly-funded network. Contestants need to do enough to get assistance elsewhere.

We firmly believe the show will return in the winter of 2016, but it may take some time to learn who is staying and who is leaving.
