‘Better Call Saul’ spoilers: Vince Gilligan hopes to satisfy fans going into finale

Better Call Saul season 1There are many reasons why “Breaking Bad” and in turn “Better Call Saul” have become so beloved, but one of the major ones is rather simple: These are shows that really put a great deal of stock in the thoughts and opinions of their fan following. Co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould really appreciate so much the attention that fans give their work, and they want to ensure that the final two episodes of this season honor that.

Speaking at a panel discussion for the penultimate episode “Pimento” this week, Gilligan stressed specifically that they are probably going to make some mistakes in connecting the canon of the original show to this prequel, however, he made it clear (per Deadline) that he will try to avoid major errors if at all possible:

“We will make mistakes, no doubt about that, but we intend not to, we intend to make as small a number of mistakes as possible…. Instead of us saying ‘Yeeeah, we have a vague memory of this happening, but we like this thing better so we won’t abide by some offhanded comment or some bit of plot that we had back in Breaking Bad. We got something better, let’s just go with that and hope people squint their eyes at it.’ We wanna be as accurate as possible.”

Gilligan also stressed that in the early days, one of his fears was that the show was not turning Jimmy McGill into Saul Goodman at a rapid enough pace. Now, he claims that he does not really want to let Jimmy go. We understand that; there is an earnestness to him that is rather sweet, and made sadder by the fact that we know it is eventually going to leave his soul as he transforms into the most crooked lawyer New Mexico has most-likely seen.
