‘Rizzoli & Isles’ season 5 (finale), episode 18 review: Maura, Jane and remembering Frost

Rizzoli -We are at the end of “Rizzoli & Isles” season 5 and if you for some reason missed episode 17 (which aired an hour before this one – double header tonight!), there was some heartbreak that Maura is dealing with, and it’s been really tough on her.

Now that Maura and Jack have ended their relationship, she is having a tough time letting go. Even though she ended their relationship for all the right reasons (so that Jack can be closer to his daughter), it doesn’t help all of the hurt feelings that Maura has. Luckily Jane is by her side to help her through all of her break up pain and it’s nice to have a finale that focuses on Jane and Maura’s friendship since that is really the meat of this show.

Jane is doing everything she can to help Maura get through this difficult time, and this includes going to any movie, music festival or restaurant Maura wants. This also involves going to a spa that Jane said she didn’t want to go to after Frost passed away and after she lost her baby, but for Maura – Jane will go to the moon. When they get there Maura sends Jane in on her own and Maura isn’t impressed that Jane isn’t coming in with her, but after her session, Maura felt more at peace with her break up with Jack.

After Maura’s time at the spa she can’t stop going on about how much it helped her clear her head, but it seems that Jane’s head is still foggy with thoughts of Frost. While sitting in a park she thinks she sees him walk by holding his transformer toy, but after chasing his ghost back to the office, she realizes that even though he is gone, he is never forgotten. We miss Frost too.

Tasha has sent out all of her applications to colleges, but is having some trouble with some of the schools because of her past, but she is still waiting for a few more to come back including the school Maura went to. She offers to call some of the admissions board members to help her get in, but Tasha doesn’t want any help and wants to get in with her own merits – of course Maura just can’t seem to stop herself from helping. As it turns out, Tasha didn’t need her help and was able to get in on her own and Vince started up a scholarship program (in Barry’s name) and the first recipient of the money is Tasha.

We couldn’t have been happier with this finale – it hit everything that we love about this show. It was focused on Jane and Maura’s friendship, and gave us some very sweet moments between them. With so many hardships this season for Jane and Maura, this was exactly the fun, hopeful ending we wanted and needed. Episode grade: A
