‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 6 spoilers: What comes next with Damon, Stefan’s mother?

No matter how you slice it, there were surprises aplenty at the end of “The Vampire Diaries” Thursday night. Not only did we get to see Bonnie’s eventual return to Mystic Falls, but there was also some news that she brought with her that potentially changes the game for many other characters: Stefan and Damon’s mom Lily is still out there, even though she is locked away.

So what does it mean? It’s basically a cool chance to unite the two brothers, and give them a new mission to take on that is ripe with mystery and thankfully independent of romance. It’s not that we are angry at this show for the romantic subplots, but we tend to find that a little bit of variety goes a long way.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview, executive producer Julie Plec hints that there are a variety of things to look forward to, and she uses just one simple word to describe the general emotion of the story that is still to come:

“I think the key word you just used was insanity. Here’s a woman they thought was long dead, having died a totally natural, human death. And there she is, what, 65 years later than they thought she died in prison world. Which means she’s either wrongly victimized, or entirely deserving of her incarceration. So those are questions that are going to be asked and will start to be delivered next [episode] when we get to know more about her.”

Personally, we’re fine if this is a story that the show takes its time with, especially since we are somewhat lacking the parental figures on the series at the moment. Just think about it for a minute. With Liz Forbes dying, who else do we have?
