Super Bowl commercials: Danny Trejo, Steve Buscemi join the Brady Bunch for Snickers

Snickers -Ready for another wacky Super Bowl commercial? This one continues the trend for Snickers of people turning into over-the-top celebrities while they are hungry, only to return to normal after they have one of the company’s chocolate bars. While not so original anymore, these are still for the most part worthy of a laugh or two upon first viewing.

As with every other commercial-related article that we are writing today, what we have for you below is our full take on the ad, including its effectiveness, its humor, and the overall brand messaging. We’ll give you a letter grade at the end to go along with it.

The good – This ad continues the Snickers tradition, but augments it slightly in giving you “The Brady Bunch,” where Danny Trejo (“Machete”) stars as Marcia Brady, complaining about getting hit in the nose with a football. (We wonder, was Peter using an inflated football? Sorry, too easy of a joke.) He complains, but then becomes normal again after he bites into a Snickers. Then, we have Steve Buscemi showing up as Jan at the end, which was a nice turn. This whole idea works well for the candy brand, so there is no reason we think this will fail.

The bad – Buscemi is probably not who we think of as “big scary guy,” even after “Boardwalk Empire.” We would have probably preferred someone like Jason Momoa from “Game of Thrones,” or maybe even Bryan Cranston in a bald cap talking about being the danger. Also, there’s no replay value to this commercial … so you may even be tired of it at the time of the big game.

The verdict – The Betty White ad was better for Snickers. Still, this is a solid, if unspectacular, entry into their series of spots. Grade: B-.
