Sean Lowe talks about what a date on ‘The Bachelor’ was really like

Book -This is an exclusive guest post written by The Bachelor’s Sean Lowe. Sean fell in love with Catherine Giudici and they married in a nationally-televised fairytale last January. But this is just the beginning for the newlyweds.

In his new autobiography, For The Right Reasons, Sean tells all about the backstage drama that fuels The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, how he overcame heartbreak to find his true love, and the personal struggles and Christian faith that have made him the man he is today.

What a Date Was Really Like On The Bachelor

Dating on the show is probably not what most people would expect. A single date might account for 15 minutes of TV time. In reality, some of those dates lasted 12 or even 14 hours. They were all-day affairs! It was awesome because we’re in these beautiful foreign countries and I got to experience so many wonderful things.

On the other hand, it was so exhausting! At the end of the day, all I wanted to do was crash. As beautiful as it was on TV, it was pretty taxing on me physically, doing that everyday for 3 months.

How The Bachelor Dates and Locations Were Chosen

Before the season started, the producers asked what kind of dates I would like to have on the show. I kept it pretty open. I gave them a few of my favorite things, “I’m active. I love the outdoors. I love exciting pulse-pounding things.” From there, they were great in tailoring the dates around my interests.

You have to remember this is a show that travels around the world with a huge production staff and then they have to work with the different boards of tourism and other groups to get everything set up. So, it’s not like I’m personally planning every detail of the date but, the show did a pretty good job of creating dates around what I liked.

Sean Lowe -How much of The Bachelor is Real vs. Scripted

I may be biased, but I think The Bachelor must be the most authentic reality show on TV.

Nothing is scripted.

They never tell you how to act, how to feel, how to react in front of a camera.

It totally makes sense to me because putting 25 women in one house will create enough drama and exciting TV, there’s no need to script it!

Of course they want to make entertaining TV and get great ratings, but to the show’s credit, and I think this is why it’s lasted as long as it has, they really want to help the bachelor or bachelorette find love on the show. It doesn’t always work but they are committed to trying their hardest.

I felt like I had the producer’s support behind me which was such a great and encouraging feeling. And, of course it helped me find Catherine! So, I would say the show is very real compared to most reality shows.
