‘The Americans’ season 3 spoilers: Does Paige’s involvement change the Jennings?

“The Americans” has been an extremely complicated world from the beginning of the series, but when you think about the direction that the show is going in now, you have to think it’s only going to get so much more messy. This is especially true when you are talking about the Jennings, who at the end of last season learned just what sort of plans the KGB had for their daughter Paige.

So how could we see her potential recruitment change their relationship? Basically, an analogy could be drawn that makes them similar to many other couples out there, in that high stress often equals conflict. The only difference here is that this stress is significantly worse than almost anything a normal couple would go through. Speaking per Yahoo TV on this subject, executive producer Joel Fields had the following to say:

Last season, they were in the best place they’d ever been in their marriage. [But] what happens to a relationship put under that kind of pressure? Can you truly love each other and yet be in conflict over the most important thing in your world?”

We feel for Elizabeth and Philip as they deal with this problem, but at the same time, this challenge is part of what makes this series so exciting. Without these sort of stakes for the two characters, the show would not have anywhere near the same level of drama or intrigue that it is going to have now.

“The Americans” returns to FX on Wednesday, January 28, and we believe through and through that it will meet expectations and then some.
