Idina Menzel defends ‘New Year’s Rockin Eve’ – ‘Let It Go’ performance

Is it time that we let Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” performance at “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” actually go? It’s possible, given the way the media has jumped all over the story this week.

In the end, the reality here is that performance was not her best, but at the same time, who in their right mind expected it to be? There were freezing temperatures in New York, and rather than trying to be aided by a backing track, she performed the entire number live. Instead of commending her for that and having no qualms with the other performers on the night, people are instead being somewhat cruel and cynical over a botched high note on an incredibly difficult song.

If was only a matter of time before Idina chose to respond to the controversy, and she did so ultimately in one of the most perfect ways imaginable. The photo below comes to us via her official Twitter account, and it shows her presenting what has to be the perfect defense of her performance. Performing is more about a feeling than anything else; if it was in fact all about singing, wouldn’t every “American Idol” winner be a superstar right now? They can sing their hearts out, but there is not always a connection behind the lyrics.

Ultimately, it feels about the right time to end the “Let It Go” phenomenon in the first place. “Frozen” is a 2013 film, and performing it on the ABC special in some ways felt like the final nail in the song’s coffin. Given that there is a “Frozen Fever” short film premiering before “Cinderella” in March, maybe there’ll be another song in there for folks to gravitate towards?

This is where you chime in: Are you a fan of Idina’s performance, and her comments after the fact? Let us know in the comments.
