‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Charlie XCX performs ‘Boom Clap,’ ‘Break the Rules’

Saturday Night Live -Sometimes when we have a musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” with a big hit in the past year, there is a certain aversion by them to actually performing this said song.

However, this is not exactly what happened on this weekend’s edition of the show featuring Charli XCX. The singer chose to lead off her performance with “Boom Clap.” This is the song that first was popularized earlier this year with “The Fault in Our Stars,” and she carried it through towards a lively performance on the show. She was clearly singing live, and received a nice round of applause at the end. We suppose the challenge for her was mostly that “SNL” is a small venue in terms of the stage, and there is only so much you can do spice up your performance.

After this performance, Charli returned a little bit later to perform her other new song “Break the Rules.” What surprised us about this particular outing was the limited set that she had behind her. Other than a band, there wasn’t really anything elaborate that was done with the staging. After seeing some of her performances on other shows, we almost expected something with a little more glitz behind it.

With this being said, if you are a Charli fan, you probably found a good bit to like here. What we find sort-of interesting is that Ariana Grande performed during the premiere, and she did a song with Iggy Azalea. Meanwhile, Iggy guested later in the season, and she did a song with Charli. Everyone’s connected!
