‘Shark Tank’ video: Can the Mensch on a Bench impress Kevin O’Leary?
Tonight, a new “Shark Tank” comes on the air with a little bit of something for everyone, and that includes apparently a Hanukkah-themed children’s brand that could change the way kids celebrate.
We do feel like on the surface, Mensch on a Bench is a great idea, even if the concept is basically just Elf on a Shelf for a different holiday. You get with each packaging a book, a Mensch character of your very own, and some other goodies. Basically, it is an opportunity to transform this Festival of Lights into something really fun during Christmastime, which has to be a pretty strange part of the year for most Jewish children.
Here’s the hard part of this business: They are valuing the company at $1.5 million, and not only is this seasonal, but it also appeals to a very particular demographic. With a limited consumer base, you are really having to prove that a good percentage of your market will be interested in something that is strictly entertainment. You are not selling something that fixes a physical problem; it’s more about creating emotional memories. The quality of the material is what is important.
This brand has been on quite the journey already. It was successfully funded on Kickstarter more than a year ago with over $22,000, so obviously quite a bit has happened between that point, and where the company is today. Given that Hanukkah is coming up immediately, who knows? Maybe this will be a big sell tonight.
If nothing else, it seems like we have a big Kevin O’Leary fan here, and unfortunately for us, we don’t get a chance to see Mr. Wonderful’s take on the business in the preview video below.
