SAG Awards 2015: ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Homeland,’ ‘House of Cards’ lead nominations

While the Emmys are a significant part of TV awards season, it does extend for the most part into what we get from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globes … though to be honest, we are not particularly fond of the former. The TV nominations feel especially phoned-in, and you would think that SAG, being the progressive organization that they are, would be more quick to recognize shows other than the same products year after year.

With that in mind, we’re going to try to project the winner of each one of these categories just based on the nominations that were announced today.

Drama Ensemble – Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, and Homeland

Go ahead and give it to “Downton Abbey.” For some reason, SAG loves this show, and has awarded it with more trophies than anything else. “Homeland” is still in recovery mode, “Game of Thrones” is too genre for them, “House of Cards” is too hip, and “Boardwalk Empire’s” been over too long.

Actor, Drama – Steve Buscemi (“Boardwalk Empire”), Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), Woody Harrelson (“True Detective”), Matthew McConaughey (“True Detective”), Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”)

We’d give it to Dinklage or Harrelson, but this has McConaughey’s name written on it already. Bryan Cranston was the only reason he did not win the Emmy.

Actress, Drama – Claire Danes (“Homeland”), Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”), Julianna Margulies (“The Good Wife”), Maggie Smith (“Downton Abbey”), Robin Wright (“House of Cards”), Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”)

Our heart years to see Maslany win. Our brain tells us that Margulies will after a much-improved season. Danes will probably come in second place, with Smith getting more votes than she really deserves to for a subpar fourth season.

Comedy Ensemble – The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Modern Family, Orange Is the New Black, Veep

“Veep” wins. “Veep” is the new “Modern Family.” This is one of the few changes we expect the show to make this year.

Actor, Comedy – Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet (“Modern Family”), Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”), William H. Macy (“Shameless”), Louis CK (“Louie”)

Give it to Parsons. We had to think about this one for a second, but the decline in popularity for “Modern Family” gives him the edge.

Actress, Comedy – Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”), Julie Bowen (“Modern Family”), Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie”), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”), Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”)

Give it to Louis-Dreyfus again. The truth is here, it’s hard to argue with it. She really is the best of the nominees.

Stunt Team – Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland, The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, 24: Live Another Day

“Game of Thrones” wins again. Personally, we’d give it to the final season of “Sons of Anarchy.”
