‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 7 spoilers: A possible Laura Carmichael surprise?

The folks over at “Downton Abbey” do like to surprise us very much, should it should not come as much of a great shock that an upcoming season 5 story is going to focus heavily on changes for Lady Edith. So what sort of changes will those by. Spoilers ahead for Americans!

When we last saw the character, she was departing with her child in tow to London, where she obviously intended to make a new life for herself. After learning that Michael Gregson was for certain dead, she started to realize that it would almost be an impossibility for her to be happy within those famous estate walls. We don’t really blame her for bolting, at least within this context.

With this being said, though, this did not seem to be a plan with any sort of permanence to it at all. After all, Violet was already hot on the scene in the last episode, and the attached photo from Sunday night’s new episode does seem to suggest further that Edith may be back at Downton already. While it’s not entirely clear the context of her return, we have to imagine that the truth about her child should be close to becoming clear. While we understand that this was a judgmental time, could they really hold so much judgment on her now based on everything that she has gone through? We hope not.

In the end, we really just want happiness for these people! Unfortunately, there could be some sad times ahead, given all of the controversy surrounding the fate of the unfortunately-named family dog Isis.
