Ratings: ‘Constantine’ starts below ‘Grimm’; ‘The Amazing Race 25’ drops big

Constantine -How good or bad are the premiere ratings for “Constantine“? It probably depends on what your take is on ratings on Friday night.

In some ways, starting with a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic is pretty atrocious, and it means that your show will be canceled shortly. However, who really thought that the show was going to debut with a 2.0 at 10:00 p.m. on a Friday night? “Hannibal” doesn’t get a 1.4 in the spot regularly, and “Dracula” was far worse than this. It really comes down to two separate things: Retention week-to-week, and also DVR viewing. This was only a tenth below the demo rating for the season 4 premiere of “Grimm” (1.5). If it keeps it up the rest of its season, we don’t see this particular DC property going anywhere. We thought that the premiere was solid (read our review here), so we’ll just have to see how it holds up the rest of the season.

This was a pretty woeful Friday all around. “The Amazing Race” fell sharply to its low of a 1.0, while “Last Man Standing” (1.1), “Cristela” (1.0), and “Hawaii Five-0” (1.1) all suffered big drops of their own. The truth here is that it’s pretty darn hard to retain viewers on a night when you don’t have to get up early for work the next day (at least for many viewers). Another reason to be worried for these shows is that next week is Halloween, and if you think that ratings were bad this week, just wait until then. While not everyone has kids or a party to attend, some viewers do and it has to be considered.

We’ll keep you updates on all of this information in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
