ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 4, episode 5 review: Olivia, Fitz, Jake, and confessions galore

Fitz -On Thursday night’s new episode of “Scandal,” we had a series of surprises, but perhaps none of them compared to Mellie’s incredibly bizarre, alcohol-infused reaction to the news that her son Jerry had been murdered rather than that he dies under some mysterious circumstances.

Fitz is a man who clearly has been through a lot over the past few years with his wife, with a lot of the pain inflicted by his own actions, it seeing Mellie ramble on drunkenly about her son’s “sacrifice” was ultimately a bridge too far for her. While he didn’t end the marriage with her, he basically made it clear that he didn’t want to discuss any matters with him.

This entire story was fiercely dramatic, and what made it all the more complex was juxtaposing what happened with Fitz and Mellie to Olivia learning about Rowan’s role in orchestrating so much of this. Of course, Joe Morton gave another incredible performance throughout most of these intense scenes.

As if all of this was not enough for you, this episode also contained a drunken David Rosen admitting to his past misdeeds to Abby, and Huck trying to establish a connection again with the woman and child that he lost so many years ago.

Are there still problems with this season? Definitely, with the biggest one being that we’re still dealing with the same themes that we have over the past few years. With that being said, we still have to give the writers and producers credit for continuing to make things interesting. Grade: B.
