‘Chicago Fire’ season 3, episode 2 review: Taylor Kinney shines in dark, difficult ‘Wow Me’

Even though time may have passed since the death of Shay on “Chicago Fire” season 3, that does not mean her ghost has completely went away. “Wow Me” was a difficult episode at times, as every firefighter handles grief in many different ways.

For Severide, it was more difficult than most. Just his scene alone in Molly’s was worth noting, as Taylor Kinney played with conviction a drunk version of Kelly, who refused to let go of his friend’s memory that he envisioned her there. He could not remember the past, and therefore wanted to pretend that everything was okay.

Severide spent the night on a firehouse bunk bed, and then had to find a way to suddenly actually be there when some from within needed him: Mills. For a few minutes in here, it was fairly easy to worry that we could be losing another key player on the show.

Luckily, Mills did work his way out of this situation eventually, which seemed at first like it set the stage for a happier end of the episode. Most of the happier times, including Casey’s proposal, took place a little earlier in the episode. We’re just happy that the guy can finally look towards the future, and be happy that he and Dawson are going to be able to move forward without just memories of the sad day Shay lost her life.

Unfortunately, the ending with some potentially-difficult baby news has us worried … even if things seem to be reasonably okay now.

The only critique we’d offer? That listening to pitches about a Molly’s food truck somehow had the most serious music ever to it. We don’t really get that, but the rest of the episode had enough right going on that we will not complain too much. Grade: B+.
