‘Outlander’ episode 7 review: ‘The Wedding,’ and those Caitriona Balfe – Sam Heughan scenes

Well, you can now definitely say that “Outlander” is holding nothing back, now is it? This is very clearly a show airing on Starz, since not many other cable networks would have touched the content of Saturday’s “The Wedding” in the slightest. This was a powerful episode emotionally, but also a very explicit one.

This is a show that has made no attempt to stray away from having some particularly long scenes. We saw this happen previously when it came to Black Jack and Claire last week, and it did so again this week. The only difference was that this time, there were fewer clothes. We do have to give credit where credit is due here, mostly to Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan for being able to pull some of these scenes off. They were largely so explicit at times that it may make some scenes from another premium cable series in “Masters of Sex” feel almost like nothing at all.

There is more that went into these, though, than just skin; through these moments, we learned that Claire legitimately enjoyed her time with Jamie … which is distressing. The show did an interesting move when it comes to weddings, as it juxtaposed often Frank and Claire’s ceremony to hers in Scotland, centuries earlier. It was a tool that showed you different sides of the character, and it paid off that moment with the wedding bands so much more at the end. Frank’s role in this series is far from over, so we wouldn’t worry too much about him just yet.

What we were surprised the most to see was just how little of the wedding at times there were, and how the wedding night was largely more of the focal point. This is an episode that we could see being polarizing to some, and it’s especially hard to talk about how on a site we like to keep fairly family-friendly as far as content goes. If you enjoyed the story of “The Wedding” from the books, we’ll at least say that you probably feel pretty good about how the show portrayed much of it. Grade: B+.
