‘Mistresses’ season 3: Do season 2 finale ratings help or hurt renewal odds?

Mistresses -It has been a few days now since the “Mistresses” season 2 finale, and with that in mind, maybe a little more time has passed for us to look at some of its numbers objectively.

The positive for the show is this: The rating adjusted up in the final figures to a 0.9 in the 18-49 demographic, which is around where most of the show averaged throughout its run in the past year. That is not a great number by any means, but ABC’s summer this year is the equivalent of that sound effect when someone loses a game on “The Price Is Right.” “Bachelor in Paradise” is only getting slightly better numbers than “Mistresses,” but it is the network’s hit of the summer right now. “The Bachelorette” had its lowest-rated season ever, “The Quest” and “Rising Star” were ratings failures, and even “Rookie Blue” lost a chunk of its audience airing later than it does in Canada.

The negative is that the number is still the number, and for most shows other than imports like “Rookie Blue,” this is not a good-enough number to survive. “Mistresses” may have to rely on DVR figures, word of mouth, or a big social media presence to have to survive. Even if ABC is only comfortable with one more season, take that, and try to use that in order to wrap up all of the storylines properly. We’d like to see it continue, and sometimes it’s a good thing to end your time before you wear out your welcome.
