‘Masters of Sex’ season 2, episode 7 review: Can Bill and Virginia mend their relationship?
With Bill out of work again things are going to be tense for him on all fronts. Virginia is also out of work and he will have a tough time getting money together to provide for Libby and his baby, so when his estranged mother offers money to help him will he take it?
Betty and her husband are divorcing and she has been hired by Bill to do some paper work for their “office” (which is really just a rented office space). They don’t have a lot of money, so Bill puts up his house, car, basically everything as collateral to get a loan. Of course he doesn’t tell Libby.
Bill is still upset that Virginia has a boyfriend and is feeling betrayed because he was really opening up in his relationship with Virginia. She has tried to apologize to Bill (what for, we don’t know), but instead he makes her feel awful about being a bad mother by parading her “many men” through her house in front of them. Bill tries once again to say that they are work colleagues and nothing else, but he’s not fooling anyone.
There is a one year time jump in the middle of the episode and now Bill and Libby have a second child (a boy and a girl). Not only that but Libby has now found out about the loan and that Bill gave the house up as collateral and still hasn’t paid back the loan.
Bill’s mother has also come back into the picture: Libby has been seeing her behind Bill’s back for over a year. His mother asks him for forgiveness and offers Bill money to help them keep a roof over their head, and Bill is furious, not only because Libby was going behind his back, but also because he is the one that wants to provide a roof for his own family. He eventually finds a way to work things out with his mom, at the very least for Libby’s sake… and his mother finds a way to get the money into Bill’s hands without him feeling like it’s a handout.
Now that Bill has lost the one person that he feels he can be completely open with sexually, he tries going to a prostitutes, but it doesn’t help. Libby reveals to Virginia that he and Libby haven’t had sex in over a year, pretty much the same time period that he and Virginia stopped sleeping together too.
Virginia tells Bill that she is completely tied to him and that he has more of her then any other man has and that his jealousy of her other men is unfounded. She says that it is unfair that he gets to go home to someone and she has to be alone and he says that even though he’s at home with Libby he is alone. It’s enough to push Bill and Virginia back into the hotel that they frequent as they get reacquainted with one another.
It was strange having such a massive time jump in the middle of an episode, and felt like it threw things off a bit. All of a sudden BAM here’s another baby (which is pretty good for a couple with fertility problems). Episode grade: C
