‘The Blacklist’ season 2 spoilers: Paul Reubens turns to the dark side

The Blacklist logo any seasonThere are some actors we never quite imagined turning up on “The Blacklist,” and Paul Reubens is one of them. Therefore, it’s easy to be surprised with the news that he will be appearing. Not only that, but his character is going to be a villain who graces at least two episodes of the show.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Reubens will play the character of Mr. Vargas, who is described as “finicky” and is very capable of taking care of messy situations within the criminal world. Speaking to the site, executive producer Jon Bokenkamp explains how this casting came about, and how even he was surprised that he managed to get the actor to come on board:

“We’re forgoing the bow tie and the bicycle, and it’s going to be something totally different, and it’s gonna be awesome … It can’t get strange enough for me. One of the most fun things is being able to write for actors who I’ve admired and think are interesting and try to play against expectations. I think this will be a fun one. I’d say he’s gonna shake things up a bit when he enters Red’s orbit.

“It started with the character. We knew what he would feel like and sound like, and then as we started kicking around names, Paul’s name came up as, ‘Well, that would be cool. That will never happen, but we might as well ask.’”

For those wondering, Reubens is actually already at work on the episode! He started filming for the role today, which is further proof that this series and its producers can work very quickly when it comes to getting precisely what they want.
