Could ‘American Idol’ winner Carrie Underwood play Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show?

The latest -Sure, the Super Bowl may not be for almost six more months, but who doesn’t want to start to see a rumor about it already?

According to sports gossip site Terez Owens (which is using anonymous sources, so be warned about that already), Carrie Underwood may be tapped to perform the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show this year in Arizona. While you may or may not want to question the validity of the original reporter, it is still pretty darn easy to say right now that we understand the logic behind it if it is true. The former “American Idol” winner already performs the Sunday Night Football theme song for NBC, who happens to be broadcasting the big game this year.

Also, Carrie is one of the biggest stars in country music, which in turn is one of the biggest genres in all of America. There hasn’t been a country music star perform this halftime show since 2003, when Shania Twain had the honor. It would be good cross-promotion for the network, and also great cred for “American Idol.” Carrie would be the first champion to ever get the chance to headline the halftime show, though she and Kelly Clarkson in particular have already landed some impressive gigs in their careers.

The only thing that we could see possibly working against Carrie is strictly that she may not have the internationally following of some pop stars, and Katy Perry is another name that we have heard floating around out there who would be very well-received. With that being said, Carrie has worked on building a European fan base the past few years, and the appeal of country is spreading.
