‘NCIS’ season 12 spoilers: The name of Bishop’s husband and more
The fact that we are going to meet Bishop’s husband at some point during “NCIS” season 12 really shouldn’t be a shocker to anyone at this point. For about two months, this and meeting Gibbs’ second ex were the only really notes related to this show that we had to talk about.
We do at least know something further about the character now: His name! Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Gary Glasberg made it clear that the husband’s name is Jake, and the show plans on also further exploring her past in addition to what her marriage is like. That could at least be two separate Bishop stories, or one conglomerated into a single episode. Given that the Jake character has not seemingly been cast yet, we wouldn’t expect him within the initial few episodes of the season.
As we’ve said all summer long, we are interested to see what happens with the Bishop character now that the team has had a full summer to write for her and come up with more ideas. Throughout most of season 11, most of what they were having to do with her was much more on-the-fly. It will also be a little easier now to balance her into the ensemble. Given that Emily Wickersham was very good during her arc on “The Bridge,” we know that there is much more that she is capable of.
Overall, the plan seems to explore more of the past and present lives of all of the characters this season, hence the aforementioned Gibbs story, Tony getting a new love interest, and more.

I love NCIS – well at least until the end of S9 after which the calibre of the scripts for some unknown reason just dive bombed – which is odd since to all intents and purposes those responsible for seasons 10 & 11 were pretty much the same as for S9. And I’m not just referring to the plots but more specifically to the quality or lack thereof of the dialogue. And whilst I was sorry to see Cote de Pablo’s ‘Ziva’ leave I was excited to see who would be replacing her – after all I just loved Kate Todd, Paula Cassidy, Jeanne, Jenny, Cassie Yates and even one off female guests characters such as Dana Hutton, and of course gorgeous Abby, so I had high hopes and an open mind when they introduced Bishop. Sadly in my opinion at any rate, the writers handled her introduction really badly and whilst I have absolutely no problem with the actress herself I just find her too young and as a result for me she upsets the team dynamic. Sadly therefore I couldn’t give a toss about her character or discovering more about her backstory. I will continue to watch NCIS in the desperate hope that S11’s “The Admiral’s Daughter” was not just a brief flash in the pan, that S12 will once more fill me with the myriad of emotions – heart stopping pain, joy and excitement – of the previous series that I love, and that considerably better judgment is made with regard to the choice and introduction of Tony’s new love interest.
Finally I’d like to add that today is Don P Bellisario’s 79th birthday. What a shame that as NCIS celebrates being the world’s most watched drama that his genius in creating the series and our favourite team has been totally ignored.

Glad to know they haven’t changed Jake’s name after a brief mention last season – you never know in television. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store for Bishop and the rest of the team. Before the complaints start coming in about how she doesn’t fit, I’ll give my two cents. I don’t think she was supposed to fit last season. Wasn’t the whole point to take someone who had never really worked as either a field agent or part of a team and have her learn how to do both? I don’t think the awkwardness was from a lack of chemistry with the cast, I think it was intentional (based on the early descriptions of her character by Mr. Glasberg). I think Emily Wickersham and the others were doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing – being tentative and feeling each other out. In other words, good acting by all. IMO of course. As for a possible romance for Tony, I won’t even go there right now. I’d like to limit the coming complaints about my post to just one subject at a time.

Wow, finally someone who doesn’t hate on Bishop! I remember watching her on her first episode and saying “I really hope this one stays on the team”. I’m so glad she did, I didn’t really like the previous guest starring ladies as a permanent team member!

Yay! another person! Yes, I must admit I miss Ziva so, so much and would love her back but i like bishop! I love her character and the “she only has two facial expressions, she is a terrible actor” is trash. She is an actor! She is doing as she is told, if she was terrible they would have gotten rid of her. End of story.

I think that you’ve made an interesting point In a way, I wish that they would play up the awkwardness a bit more instead of focusing on a backstory. IMO we get far too many of these but the best episodes are more than not, the ones that are case driven, with subtle lines or moments tossed in that spill little tantalizing secrets about the team without everything being spelled out so explicitly. This is something early NCIS was very good at and has disappeared to some extent with the excessive writing of character backstory episodes.

Erin, I agree with you about the way the show used to tease and hint at backstory and character. I am always amazed at how much we actually knew about the character’s lives back then based on the little tidbits that were thrown in. Bellisario was a genius when it came to that. He always left us wanting more and sometimes now we would prefer less.

You make a very good point, and one that I think was borne out by the way she was written in later episodes, where she’s shown as being willing to learn from Tim and Tony, and willing to try and figure out how to fit in. I, too, look forward to seeing what they will do this season.

What a very interesting idea. I never thought of that, but it sure would fit with her coming from one job to another. They are completely different and there would be some getting used to on all of their parts.
