‘Sam & Cat’: Jeannette McCurdy finally responds to cancellation, against ‘role model’ label

Sam & Cat -As any fan of Nickelodeon’s “Sam & Cat” surely knows by now, the show is not coming back on the network for another season. This was a decision that had a ton of controversy around it still, and mostly because of the sole fact that it was coming off a huge first-season order, there was discord behind the scenes with Jeannette McCurdy and Nickelodeon, and Ariana Grande’s music career took off to a point where there was no real way for her to feasibly do it all.

So with the revelation that the show is over, McCurdy finally spoke up in a most on Reddit, not too long after Ariana wrote a letter doing the same. The major difference? McCurdy took her most to mostly speak out against the idea of herself as a role model, which is something that her co-star is more willing to embrace:

“I am proud of the way I live my life. I am proud of my choices. I am proud that no one can call me fake or say I don’t stand up for myself. I am proud that my friends and family would say that I’m a good person. Calling a celebrity a role model is like calling a stranger a role model. The knowledge you have of a celebrity is no more than a caricature drawn by media tastemakers specializing in selling you an image you’re dying to buy. It’s good to have heroes, but you have to look for them in the right places. They say don’t look for true love in a bar, well I say, don’t look for role models on screens. … I encourage you to base your idea of a role model off of someone you know well enough to see purely, not in the light, cameras, and actions of Hollywood.”

To an extent, we agree with what Jeannette is saying in that it’s better to aspire to be lack a real person you know than an ideal of a person you see on TV. That creates unrealistic expectations. Unfortunately, it is also near impossible to actually expect this ideal to be met. There are way too many people out there in love with the idea of celebrity for this to ever really go away.

As of right now, all we hope for McCurdy is that she gets another TV gig soon. We don’t have any expectations for her, but do want to continue to see her in entertainment.
