Ratings debate: Does ‘The Tomorrow People’ have a season 2 in its future?

We’ve made it to that time of year again: Ratings debate season! This is where we will be publishing many articles talking about whether or not a show will or should be coming back, while also rendering our verdict.

Over the past two years our track record has been pretty solid on these, but the one network that has always been somewhat hart to predict is The CW. Last year, “The Carrie Diaries” is one of the few shows we picked wrong, since the network renewed it based on streaming data that is not available. “The Tomorrow People” may or may not be “The Carrie Diaries” of this year. It has some other information out there that tracks well, but also some that makes us seriously concerned that it will live to see a metaphorical tomorrow on TV.

The case for renewal – When it comes to quality, it’s improved tremendously since its early days trying to sell us on Robbie Amell as a high school student. It’s also become more complex, and less focused on cheesy romantic subplots. Also, it can at least say that it survived a pretty rocky move to Monday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, which is historically one of the network’s worst timeslots thanks to competition.

The case for cancellation – The numbers just aren’t that good anymore. Getting a 0.3 and less than 800,000 viewers does not inspire a whole lot of confidence regardless of the night, and it’s not going to be put after “Arrow” again on the schedule. This show has had a full season to try things out, and renewing the show (especially when you factor in typical erosion) means that you could be seeing 0.2 ratings at this time next year.

Current verdict – If “The Tomorrow People” is renewed, it will likely be for a 13-episode season like with what they give “The Carrie Diaries.” The CW has “The Flash,” the “Supernatural” spin-off, and “iZombie” among its potential new shows. They’ve got a lot of stuff to feel more confident in than a show that has lost a good chunk of what it premiered with earlier this season. Moving the show was the first sign that things were going south, and if it comes down to this show versus “The 100,” the latter will win out. It’s holding onto a much larger percentage of the “Arrow” lead-in. It may be getting similar ratings to what “The Tomorrow People” did in the fall, but it’s harder to get viewers to watch in the spring.

What do you think is going to happen?
