‘How I Met Your Dad’ hires Meg Ryan in Bob Saget – ‘narrator’ role

CBS -Just as “How I Met Your Mother” had its Future Ted, “How I Met Your Dad” will have Future Sally … at least if the show ends up being picked up to series.

Multiple outlets are reporting today that Meg Ryan has been brought in to be the “someday” version of Greta Gerwig’s character, who narrates the story much in the same way that Bob Saget did with the original show for so many years. This means that Ryan would never appear on-camera, but still have an important role to play in the show’s overall mythology. She gets you from point A to point B, and drops some important clues about the journey in the process.

Even though the finale for “How I Met Your Mother” was largely loathed, CBS is still reportedly high on the prospects of the spin-off show, which actually does not have any connection to the original save for the name and the format of it. This decision is likely helped by the fact that “How I Met Your Mother” was consistently the network’s #2 comedy behind “The Big Bang Theory,” and ended up making stars out of Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders, even if they had other work beforehand.

Personally, we don’t have a hard time at all envisioning the show getting some decent ratings over the course of a season. The bigger issue at hand here could simply come via them trying to grab viewers who were turned off by the original finale, and don’t want to sit through something again where they felt like they were being misled. We’ll still watch, at least at first, since we do care about the journey even if the end is disappointing.
