See Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, more react to Stephen Colbert replacing David Letterman

Late ShowTypically, we find these whole “celebrities react to random major event” articles to be incredibly annoying and not particularly worthy of that much discussion. So what makes this one different ? It’s because late-night TV has become almost an elite club that only a few people really understand. It’s like getting into that really prestigious country club: Hard to get into, and the membership is almost entirely old rich dudes.

Yes, we could continue complaining about the lack of diversity in late-night, but did you really think that CBS of all people was going to make a progressive hire? This is a network that could be airing three “NCIS” shows and a spin-off of “How I Met Your Mother” in the fall. If they find an idea, they stick to it until they completely drive it into the ground.

All this aside, Stephen Colbert is a great replacement for David Letterman in this instance in that he’s experienced, funny, and CBS already knows him well. He’s also extremely well-respected by his other late-night colleagues, based on some of the messages that have come in so far today.

Seth Meyers – “Congratulations to @StephenAtHome! Could not have happened to a nicer guy.”

Craig Ferguson – “Congratulations to the hugely talented and fragrant and lovely @StephenAtHome on the new gig. Welcome to the CBS funhouse.”

Jimmy Kimmel – “Congratulations to @StephenAtHome – a finer or funnier man I do not know.”

Jimmy Fallon – “I’d like to welcome the great @StephenAtHome to network late night and also congratulate him on his new name: Jimmy Colbert.”

Arsenio Hall – “Even though Dave Letterman wants ME to replace him, @CBS wants Stephen Colbert! Oh well. You go SC! #congratz.”
