‘Supernatural’ season 9 notes: New stories on Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins
“Supernatural” fans, we understand if you are feeling a little bit impatient right now. After all, the show has not aired a new episode in over a week now, and you still have more than a week to go until the next new episode “Meta Fiction” comes on the air.
But, we do have some more fun news from production to start things off here, including this attached photo highlighting Jensen Ackles (but with a Jared Padalecki cameo to boot). This image is from the 22nd episode of the season, and frequent “Supernatural” director Guy Bee was the first to post it on his Twitter account. Given that this is the penultimate episode of the season, we imagine that this is when everyone is starting to wind down and prepare for the summer … but not before dropping some big shockers on us first. Eventually, we know that the battle over Heaven and the Winchester storylines are going to intersect, which is great news for those of you who like seeing Sam and Dean work with Castiel.
Speaking of Misha Collins … Take a look at the actor’s Facebook page of a very in-depth account of how some folks at The CW managed to turn around an April Fools’ joke that he tried to pull with Orlando Jones around on him. It’s a funny story, but there is also an important nugget of truth in here as he says that his status for season 10 is still unclear. Even though the show is renewed, he has to figure out if he has a full-time job again. Given the ratings this season we feel like it’s likely, but “Supernatural” has surprised us before.

Words cannot describe how much I am looking forward to seeing Cas, Dean, and Sam working together once again…and just to seeing Cas again. I feel like it has been forever since I got to enjoy scenes with my favorite angel, and especially scenes with my favorite trio! Go Team Free Will!
I am really, really, really hoping that Misha will be back as Cas in Season 10 and that he’ll be in more of that season than he has in this one. Much as I love other aspects of the show, if Misha doesn’t return then I doubt I will either.

If Misha leaves, it will not be the same, and we all know it, either we love Cas or not. Personally, I will be very sad if he isn’t in the next season. I mean, the writers have to see Cas’ fandom and it’s pretty huge. I don’t want to get to the point of saying ”Cas isn’t here and it’s not the same, so I think I’ll stop watchig Supernatural”. It’ll break my heart if I have to make that choice.

Any speculation that Cas will not be back is just drama. Unless Misha himself says he would rather not do the show then it is obvious that Cas will be with Team Free Will forever. I think everyone who is associated with the show is very much on board with how popular and important a character Cas is. Our little fallen angel, Cas and dear leader, Misha will be in our hearts always.

Since season 4 Cas has been and still is part very important in the storyline of this show. So I cant imagine a season without Cas. To be honest SPN wouldnt be the same without this amazing character. Now not only we watch SPN for Dean & Sam. We watch SPN for Castiel too!!!

I hope the team aren’t stupid enough to get rid of Cas/Misha, simple

I would be extremely disappointed if Misha Collins is not renewed for S10. The storyline of this show has already gone down in my eyes. I am just hanging in there for Cas’ episodes so if it is the end for Misha it is THE END for me too.

I would be delighted if Cas was written out of Supernatural. I feel angels have taken up far too much of the stories and not really gone anywhere. I wish Mr Collins well as this is nothing to do with him personally. I state this as I’m tired of being accused of “hating” – I dislike and am bored with the character. This is no reflection on Mr Collins. It is the writing that has become stale.

I quite agree. Cas has outlived his purpose in this series. Nothing personal about the fine person that is Misha, but I am ambivalent about his character. We need to move on and not keep characters just because we like the actor. No hating please.

S10 without Cas will be a big mistake! The show needs to go back to TFW…have Cas with the bros…not off on his own. Re-do the human!Cas storyline properly…not the crap fest it was this season. Misha is made of rainbows & deserves to still be on SPN. TPTB are fools if they let him & Cas go!

Ratings don’t lie. Castiel is still an integral part of the series and not renewing Misha’s contract would be a huge mistake. That being said, I think the main discussions going on behind the scenes is not whether to let Misha go or not, but instead- how much Castiel next Season. It is my hope they make him a permanent regular, even if they end up transitioning him between the main show and the spin off. We need MORE Castiel. Not less. And as a personal request, I hope for more Dean/Cas episodes. Those are always my fave. Looking forward to Meta Fiction! This is going to be one crazy and heartbreaking ride to be sure. That’s SPN for ya!

Ratlngs have risen because finally Dean has been given a story of his own and his performance is outstanding. Think about it what noteworthy thing has Cas contributed to this season so far. They are keeping a popular star around to appease his fans.

I think your last point is a biased point of view and your former point is very dismissive of Castiel’s own personal storyline which did contribute to overall ratings which Carver himself pointed out in an interview. I get the feeling TPTB don’t do anything to ‘appease’ fans. That assumption does a disservice to their integrity as creators and writers.

Of course my point of view is biased. I have an opinion which may or may not be agreeable to all. That’s ok, that’s what makes the world go round. I don’t think the integrity of the creators or writers is in question if they try to integrate fan ideas or concerns. That’s why they have had staying power because they are responsive.

Cas to me is just as important as Dean and Sam. The show feels incomplete without Cas now. The quality of the show for me has definitely gone out, what with so many plot holes and canon inconsistencies, I am just barely watching it for Cas. So if he goes I go too.

Cas needs to go, go, go. It’s been obvious since the end of S.5 that they are making crap up just to give him something to do, and it’s just more boring angel crap forced in when it’s not necessary. I’d rather they bring back Bobby or Kevin if they need supporting characters.
I care about Sam and Dean and their relationship on the show. They need to really let them talk to each other for once, real drama and interaction, real friendship, and no fake band aids like we got at the end of S.8 with Sacrifice. They undid that right away in episode 1 of this season, and I’m just tired of the constant reruns of seasons past.
Also, Sam needs to save Dean from the Mark of Cain or at least from whatever happens at the end of the season. And we need Sam’s point of view, and actual episodes about and for Sam. This season has been very poor at giving Sam anything at all, and I’m nearly as disappointed with it as I was with S.7.

I really watch the show for Dean and Sam, their brother relationship and their journey, so it wouldn’t bother me too much if there was no Cas. I love Misha though.

Well… there’s the problem. If they add Cas back in more often, the show’s creative team will have to start dealing with the many unanswered queerbaiting questions and allegations related to previous seasons again that they took so much care to try to sidetrack this entire season.

They’ve tried to get Cas off the show before, as a result, that showrunner is gone, Misha came back, and then as a regular. Most important, give Castiel storylines so he works with the Winchesters, and isn’t off doing ‘random angel things’

I suspect a cliffhanger is coming and how do you keep a Castiel fan in suspense?
I’ll tell you later this summer.

Huge mistake to write out Cas. I would expect big backlash in twitter, tumblr and Facebook fandoms resulting in ratings loses. I don’t think the SPN TPTB would be so foolish, even from a strictly monetary point of view. Misha brings so much free publicity for the show. Exactly what would they gain and they would have so much to lose? I am confident that he will return and direct another episode, his debut episode was an amazing job. Can’t even imagine SPN without him. So I probably would not continue watching.

I would be VERY disappointed if they didn’t renew Misha for S10. The best episodes are always the ones where Dean, Sam & Cas all work together, so to get rid of Cas would be a huge step backwards, and it’s a step that would result in me not watching the show anymore. I’m sure TPTB know better than to get rid of one of their major draw cards though! The sooner they announce his status, the better. Can’t wait to see his return in Meta Fiction though!

If Misha Collins ISN’T in season ten, I’m not watching; case closed. I’ve been a viewer since season one, but I haven’t watched for simply Dean and Sam since season four. I now watch for Dean, Sam, AND Cas. If any one of those characters is written out/killed off, including Cas, I’m not watching anymore.

you do realize supernatural is about 2 brothers and not 2 brothers and 1 angel, right? new title of the show. 2 humans and 1 half human! lol. (two and an half men reference)
I like the character cas, but sometimes its boring to see dean and sam babysit cas when he was weak and when the guys kept calling for cas for this and that, the show reminded me of charmed when the sisters kept calling for leo their white lighter! it was annoying to see. but overall, cas was funny. but sometimes the show must go on. (I am sure misha directed some episodes so he’s not really gone from the show) just not in cast mode.
I think the show should have stopped when the storyline did in season 5. (I did like the dean dog episode in season 8 I believe)(they should make more dog and human episodes)
but like smallville, the show wants to make $$$. all shows do. and the reruns is more $$$. more episodes + more reruns=$$$
would the show supernatural made it to season 10 if Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki were never in the show in the first place???

Show stopped being just about two brothers a long time ago. Part of a healthy developing show is main characters creating and maintaining developing relationships with other characters which creates dynamics for the main characters. This is a fact with any piece of fiction. Sure, the central theme will always be about the developing relationship between the brothers BUT it is also about the brothers as single entities operating in a world in which they are making their own choices and forging their own- separate identities and family/friendship paradigms. You know… like most healthy humans have to do eventually.
