Box office results: ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ near $140 millionby November 20, 2011
As expected by just about everyone on the planet, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part 1)” managed to be #1 at the box office this weekend — though it didn’t end up being the highest-grossing movie in the franchise for its opening weekend.
At the moment, the film seems poised to score $139.5 million for the weekend — just under $3 million less than what “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” scored when it came out two years ago. It also added an impressive $133 million overseas.
This opening ranks “Breaking Dawn” as the fifth-largest opening of all time, and we have no reason to believe that it will end up making Summit Entertainment very happy by the end of its run.
The success of “Twilight” meant that there were failures elsewhere, though — including “Happy Feet Two,” which disappointed with a $22 million opening. With “The Muppets” and other family films hitting theaters soon, these penguins are not going to have much of a chance.
While “Twilight” is easily the biggest winner of the weekend, there is another champion down at #10 in “The Descendants.” Although it debuted in under 30 theaters, the George Clooney film grossed an impressive $1.2 million. It actually earned more per screen than “Breaking Dawn,” and will expand quickly in the coming weeks.
